The marketing department for a large international corporation was tasked with updating the headshot photos for all employees. Their mandate was to make sure that the subject of each photo appeared similar in size and position to all the other photos, ensuring that when placed together, all photos looked extremely uniform. As different divisions of this corporation were spread across several states and even countries, multiple photographers were hired to take the headshots. This meant that the raw photos which needed to be processed into the final product were all different in their composition. Manually editing and cropping each photo would take hundreds, if not thousands, of hours due to the fact that this corporation had several hundred employees whose headshots needed to be updated.The Solution
Recognizing that this was a very tedious and manual task, we proceeded to build software which would automate this task. We built a custom program based in the browser that would measure the subject of each photo and correctly resize, crop, and align the subject to ensure all persons appeared the same size and in the same position in each photo. The solution used advanced face detection algorithms to identify the subject in each image, regardless of the original framing, lighting, or background. It then applied a series of transformations to standardize the appearance according to the corporation’s branding guidelines. A single run of the program could process hundreds of photos at a time, reducing manual processing time from hundreds of hours down to just seconds. A preview screen was added so that users could manually adjust each photo as needed, providing both automation and quality control in a single interface.The Results
The end result was hundreds of employee headshot photos, perfectly sized and aligned just as required.
